Sanctuary in Portugal
For Animals
Kukus Garden e.V.
Portugal
A Place of Peace for All Living Beings

Kukus Garden e.V. is a lovingly run sanctuary in Portugal that offers rescued animals a permanent, beautiful and appropiate home – free from exploitation, pressure, or expectation. Spread across roughly 6.5 hectares, more than 45 animals live here: chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs, cats, pot-bellied pigs, and even a tortoise. The sanctuary was founded in 2022 by Nina and Stevo, who built it from the ground up – without electricity, water, or infrastructure. Today, Kukus Garden is a place of peace, respect, and deep connection between humans, animals, and nature. Beyond animal welfare, Nina and Stevo aim to inspire change through encounters, conversations, and hosting guests. Visitors can stay in a tiny house, glamping area, or park their own vans on-site. The entire project is volunteer-based and self-funded. Donations go directly toward food, care, and future rescues. A project built on heart, hope, and standing.

Community Action for Forest and Water Conservation in San Pedro

ASECUSAR Association is a non-profit, community-based organization whose area of influence is in the San Pedro district, within the buffer zone of Chirripó National Park in Costa Rica. ASECUSAR was founded to protect and restore natural resources, promote sustainable tourism development, and conserve watersheds. Currently, ASECUSAR manages and protects approximately 40 hectares of mountain forest, which serves to safeguard the water intake of the San Pedro aqueduct. This forest is home to various animal and plant species and is used for hiking, environmental education, and community-based tourism. ASECUSAR was established in 2007, and over the years it has carried out projects in rural community tourism, monitoring and protection of natural resources, and environmental education.

From Suffering to Better Welfare

African Institute for Animal Welfare (AIFAW)
Uganda
Change for pigs through education, training, and humane handling

The African Institute for Animal Welfare works toward a future where animals no longer have to suffer for human consumption. But while millions of animals continue to be farmed and slaughtered, AIFAW believes we cannot look away from the suffering happening today.
In Uganda, their investigations documented pigs being dragged, overcrowded during transport, seriously injured, slaughtered in front of other animals, and even exposed to scalding water before death was confirmed.
Through this project, AIFAW will train 60 farmers, transporters, handlers, slaughter workers, and managers in Wakiso and Masaka in practical ways to reduce fear, injuries, overcrowding, and unnecessary suffering during transport, handling, and slaughter. Experienced veterinarians will provide hands-on training, followed by workplace visits to support lasting changes.
The goal is to end animal suffering. The reality is that animals are still being slaughtered. Until that changes, the AIFAW refuses to ignore suffering that can be prevented today.
